BUILDING a mosque in Genoa is a highly sensitive political topic. The city has a long Catholic history, but since a few decades a rising number of Muslim immigrants have settled in this Italian harbour city.
Up to today the strong and growing Islamic community lacks a symbolic heart in the form of a build space, a central meeting point for both worship as well as social activities.
In order to provide some new perspectives in the debate on this issue, the San Rocco Summer School 2013 initiated to ask a selected group of students and young architects to design a mosque for Genoa. Sixteen groups of three members developed a speculative proposal each group.
